Omicron May Outrun Delta and some Good News #shorts #omicron #nursing

Genetic changes in Omicron may make it more transmissable. The Network for Genomic Surveillance in South Africa shows that Omicron has outpaced Delta in South Africa. In October 80% of all COVID cases sequenced in South Africa were from Delta. Omicron wasn’t even in the picture. In November 75% of viruses have been Omicron, with Delta 22%.

A December 4 report from the South African Medical Research Council outlined the early experience of 42 COVID19 patients treated at several hospitals in the province. In the last 2 weeks ending 12/2 70% of patients did not need supplemental oxygen and few developed COVID19 pneumonia. 4 patients required a higher level of care and 1 patient placed in the ICU. Overall the length of stay was 2.8 days compared to 8.5 day average seen in COVID19 Patients in the last 18 months. It’s still important to remain cautious but this is definitely some good news.
