Omicron Variant The Good and the Bad

In this video I cover what we currently know about the Omicron Variant.

As of 11/29/21
Keep in mind this is preliminary and could change at any time.

On November 26 WHO designated Omicron a variant of concern
Because of its several mutations
All viruses mutate
Omicron was concerning because there are at least 50 mutations with 32 mutations on the spike protein
Experts say that similar mutations seen in other variants have been associated with higher transmission and a higher chance of escaping the body’s immune defenses.
Preliminary evidence states that there may be an increased risk of reinfection with omicron in people who have previously had covid 19
We still don’t know the effectiveness of the vaccine against the Omicron variant-more data to come.
The current PCR tests that are being used still detect the infection, we need more data on it’s effect on rapid antigen tests
Initial infections were reported among minority students-younger tend to have more mild disease
However a S. African doctor named Dr. Angelique Coetzee says patients with omicron are presenting with very mild symptoms.
Unlike Delta there has been no loss of smell or taste and there has been no major drop in oxygen levels with the new variant.
The most predominant complaint is severe fatigue for 1-2 days, h/a, b/a and pain.
