Avatar 3’s 9-Hour Cut Could Be Released on Disney+ as a Mini-Series
Earlier this year, rumors of an incredibly extended cut of James Cameron’s Avatar 3 began floating around. Now a new report suggests that the extended cut of the film could be released as a miniseries. During the latest episode of The Hot Mic podcast, Jeff Sneider discussed the possibility of Avatar 3 having a whopping nine-hour extended cut. According to Rocha, Cameron has contemplated finishing the visual effects for the entirety of the third film’s content and then releasing it on Disney+ as a limited series following the release of the theatrical cut of the film. “The idea is that...
“The idea is that Cameron would do all the visual effects for his nine-hour cut of Avatar 3 and then release it on Disney+ as a limited series after the theatrical cut is released,” Sneider said. Of course, there’s no concrete evidence that Cameron will end up doing this, but in an era where extended cuts of films are getting released more and more, it isn’t too out of the ordinary to think it could happen. As it stands, not too much is known about Avatar 3, but Cameron did tease the introduction of more Na’vi in the film, specifically the “Ash People.” “To show cultures different from those I have already shown,” Cameron told French outlet 20 Minutes (thanks to John Francis Gillman for the tip and translation). “The fire will be represented by the ‘Ash People.’ I want to reveal the Na’vi from another angle because, for the moment, I have only shown their good sides. In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. In Avatar 3, we’ll have the opposite.” Avatar 3 is tentatively scheduled for December 20, 2024. Further sequels also have release dates with Avatar 4 set for December 18, 2026, and Avatar 5 on December 22, 2028.
