A recently passed California state law has been touted as the most comprehensive and expansive record-clearing law of its kind in the US. The law mandates that the criminal records of all individuals who have completed their sentence be sealed, with the exception of sex offenders and violent felons. The sealing of records is automatic, but it is not widespread. Only a fraction of the eight million individuals in California with criminal records will have an old conviction automatically sealed, and there is a time lag involved. However, the law has significant implications for employment and housing opportunities, as records of arrests that did not lead to convictions will also be sealed. State Senator María Elena Durazo (D-L.A.), who introduced the bill, stated that the law would benefit not only individuals but also entire families and communities.
