Mencius was a famous Chinese philosopher during the 2nd century BC. He was from the Confucian school, and ethics, social, and political philosophy were his main areas of interest.
He was one of the most important people to explain Confucianism. Mencius learned from Zisi, who was the grandson of the great Confucius. He was a wise Chinese man who traveled around China for over 40 years, sharing his knowledge and advising different rulers.
Neo-Confucians of the Song dynasty thought that Mencius' interpretation of Confucianism was traditional and conformist. Mencius' followers were influential feudal lords who thought they were more powerful than Confucius.
The book "The Mencius" records his conversations with the rulers of China. It has long, complicated dialogues, interesting arguments, and prose. Mencius didn't believe in the absolute power of the monarchy and instead praised the power of the average citizen.
Historians think he lived simultaneously as famous philosophers like Xun Zi, Zhuangzi, Gaozi, and Plato.
