These side tables are made from construction grade pine lumber from the home center and topped with 1 1/2" thick solid ash slabs of hardwood. Why mix up the wood like that? To cut down on cost and because the plan was always to finish the bases with tinted lacquer so it didn't really matter what the grain pattern looked like. We wanted the top to be ash to match the other wood we have in the living room and because it is a very hard wood and will resist the dents and dings the kids will try and put in it!

I used a easy trick to make "faux" shaker style drawer and door faces using a combo of pocket holes and plywood. Very easy and looks just like a real cope and stick shaker door!
