Jury Awards a BILLION DOLLARS in Cox Communications Music Piracy Case

BREAKING IP NEWS with Attorney Steve®. In this video, we talk about the HUGE TEN FIGURE JURY VERDICT in the Sony Music Entertainment et al, case vs. Cox Communications a case that comes from the Federal District Court in Virginia, Alexandria division.

The RIIA allegedly noticed a lot of music infringement coming through Cox subscribers (approximately 20,000 subscribers who wire downloading and file-sharing music from major record labels such as Sony, Universal, Warner Music Group, EMG and others.

The jury found Cox Communications liable for contributory copyright infringement and vicarious infringement of over 10,000 songs.

The jury found that Cox was aware of the infringement and did not stop it and thus, did not qualify for DMCA "safe harbor" protection which ISP's will normally rely on. The lawsuit was filed in 2018 and Cox has stated it plans to appeal.
