Woke Fraud: Why is it so difficult to dislodge and purge?

I discuss a broad problem in our society. There is fraud and corruption. For various reasons, many people are blind to it and fall for all kinds of scams. They are tricked into things.

The question is what happens when someone gets into something they can't easily get out of? Why are so many Woke people stuck and unable to change course after they make a wrong turn?
