The newest Generation 3 version of Ratnik looks like a power ranger and claims to be able to stop a 50 BMG but before we unpack whether thats true or not we need to look at where this whole idea came from. Ratnik is important to study because this is one of the United States biggest potential threats and there might be something valuable we can learn and use ourselves from Russia's state of the art infantry modernization program.

I don’t know about you but I’m noticing a pattern here. Every single major world power for the past decade has been working on a program similar to Ratnik. The US Forces have their Nett Warrior the French call it the Feline system and the British are working on the FIST program but no matter what odd name choice you go with they all have the same exact goal in common: connect the regular infantryman to all of the enhancements that the digital world has brought to other jobs. We’ve seen how recent technological advancements have completely changed the way pilots, artillery and tankers operate but at the same time all of those digital benefits seem to have eluded the infantry until now. Why is that? Is it because us ground pounders are complete idiots who can barely figure out how to send an email? Wait, don’t answer that.
The goal for Ratnik and indeed for all the worlds military forces right now is to figure out a way to get every soldier a GPS, a heads up augmented reality system, ballistic computer smart optics, new uniforms, and even some good old fashioned new hardware in the form of an upgraded primary weapon. Ratnik appears on the surface to check all the boxes. Another common denominator between the Ratnik program and the other military modernization programs around the world is they require the suite of systems to be easily adjusted based on a wide range of missions.
Throughout the modern era, Russia has a reputation for lagging behind its Western competitors in technical prowess, they’ve instead been relying on rugged simplicity, sheer numbers and a good old fashioned love for the motherland. Nostrovia. Not to mention they’ve had some help from their brutal Winters. From rifles to tanks, the history record of the Russia Military has proven time and time again that they know what they’re doing when it comes to designing effective military equipment based around the keep it simple stupid premise. But no one has ever accused them of being cutting edge. Ratnik may just prove the exception.
