NEW Upgrade to the M2 50 caliber Machine Gun

The “Ma Deuce” 50 caliber machine gun is getting some upgrades. We cover the 2003 Iraq War true medal of honor story of SFC Paul Ray Smith. He was KIA after defending his position against 200 enemy troops. The Army is changing from the M2 HB to the M2 A1. This will give the weapon a quick change barrel and possibly a suppressor for the first time.

It will reduce the amount of hours you have to spend messing around with the annoying task of headspace and timing. We’ll also cover the development history of the powerful weapon.

Our vehicle crew on the Stryker had the responsibility of looking after and maintaining the 50 cal. It was like taking care of an 84 pound child. They had to constantly be taking the barrel off and setting the headspace and then making sure it cycled right. Add to this making sure it was calibrated on the remote weapons system correctly and it starts to become a nightmare to take care of so these advances will I am sure be very welcome news to those crews. These upgrades will add 2 pounds of weight and 2 inches to the overall length of the system. This brings it to 86 pounds and 67 inches.

There are two types of adapters being added to the muzzle. The first option is the new flash suppressor. This claims it can reduce the muzzle flash by 95%. This is a big advantage when fighting at night and staying hidden. The second possible option being floated is the suppressor. Also known as a silencer. But don’t go around any gun community saying the term silencer you’ll look like a complete philistine. It’s called a suppressor because it only suppresses the noise. Although the few suppressed weapons I’ve fired in real life were quiet as heck, about as silent as a fart.

The idea of a suppressed “Ma Deuce” was first filtered with when the Marines decided to try out equipping an entire unit from the M4 to the M2 50 Cal with a suppressor. Since then the Navy has issued a request for a weapon engineer to come up with a suppressor for them that won’t inhibit the rate of fire. By the way, for anyone curious where the term Ma Deuce came from, it's a reference to Mother of All Machine Guns which comes from its designating M 2. 2 being the deuce. You get it.
