Last year, WLBT News Anchor Barbie Bassett came under fire for on-air comments, ending with her apologizing, claiming she’d learned, and promising to take a class and do better when it comes to making racial comments. The segment that led up to the apology was giving way-too-comfortable-and-trying-too-hard vibes, from using “girl and sis” while talking to a Black reporter to the end when she asked if the reporter’s mom or “grandmammy” had a pie recipe that could loosen the lips of some men who might have news on an event.

Well, any training that Bassett went through didn’t take, at least not in the eyes of her employers, because now she has been officially let go. This time, she put her foot in her mouth when talking about Snoop Dogg. During the conversation, someone asked her a question, and she thought she was about to rack up some cool points, responding with “For shizzle my nizzle.” Now, the nizzle on that means n*gga, so some could argue that she said a version of the n-word on camera. We’re guessing it’s this line of logic that her employers didn’t want to deal with, so they let her go.

Now, if you think this is wrong, at least put it in the proper place. If this is wrong (and that’s a big if,) it is one of the most insignificant consequences of racial oppression, and it’s merely inconveniencing the life of one wealthy woman who benefits from that same system of oppression. So if you find yourself upset on her behalf, recalibrate and find something serious to spend your outrage on.
