Here’s how the crazy but true story went down. It’s October 1918 only one month before the end of World War 1 during the 2nd bloodiest battle in all of human history to this day, called the Meuse Argonne Offensive. This battle was a massive allied assault across the whole trench line, designed to end the stalemate of trench warfare that described much of World War 1. If the Meuse Argonne Offensive was successful they’d win the war, if they failed the end would be uncertain.
29 year old Corporal Alvin York finds himself in France guarding some german prisoners when suddenly they start taking fire, they’ve been ambushed by the German Army. His platoon is ordered to infiltrate the enemy lines and silence the german machine gun positions that are killing everyone around him. 3 of his non commissioned officers in his platoon are killed on that spot, this suddenly made him next in line to lead.
This quote is directly from his journal as he recounts the beginning of the battle.
“The Germans got us, and they got us right smart. Their machine guns were up there on the heights overlooking us and well hidden, and we couldn't tell for certain where the terrible heavy fire was coming from ... Our boys just went down like the long grass before the mowing machine at home.”
At this point Corporal York fires all his ammo from his rifle he’s able to kill 20 germans with his precision fire. From his journal in his own words quote:
1.2 million Americans took part in the battle. It was the 2nd worst battle in human history. There were 350,000 casualties at the end of the fighting in November of 1918.
