DEDHAM, Mass. —
Richard Comenzo, an attorney with ties to Brookline and Stoughton, was convicted Thursday on child pornography charges.

The verdict ends a long legal battle that began with his arrest in 2014. Dozens of files were found on two computers inside Comenzo’s apartment containing photos of “prepubescent children in various stages of undress and/or engaged in sexual acts,” court documents said.
Comenzo was allowed to continue practicing law as his case went to trial. It wasn't immediately clear how his conviction will affect his status.

Comenzo opted to be tried before a judge instead of a jury. During his trial, he claimed he was allowed to have the child pornography because of an exemption in the law that allows police, prosecutors and others to access it during the course of their work.

But Dedham Superior Court Judge Douglas Wilkins rejected that argument and found Comenzo guilty of both possession and distribution of child pornography.

The distribution charge carries a 10-year minimum sentence if the judge opts for a prison term, though he could also be sentenced to probation. Sentencing is scheduled for March 23.

Comenzo, wearing a mask, showed little visible emotion as he left the courtroom after his conviction.
