In a move intended to bolster NATO's eastern flank, the United States has opened its first permanent military garrison in Poland. The base is located in Poznań at Camp Kościuszko and will act as the headquarters for the US Army’s V Corps in Poland.

Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak described the establishment of the permanent garrison as a historic moment, saying, "We have been striving for this for years – for this word ‘permanent’ – and it has now become fact." While Poland has long hosted US troops on a rotational basis, it had lobbied Washington for a permanent presence.

The opening ceremony was attended by Lieutenant General John Kolasheski, commander of the V Corps, and US Ambassador to Poland Mark Brzezinski, who declared that the inauguration of the garrison was a sign that "the United States is committed to Poland and the NATO alliance, and that we are united in the face of Russian aggression."

The new garrison is seen as both symbolic and practical, intended to show American military involvement in Poland will be permanent while allowing the US military and civilians to better understand the specifics of Poland and the region, and to cooperate more closely with the Polish armed forces.
