What is Depleted Uranium? #military

Depleted Uranium is used as a high-speed penetrator against armored vehicles - essentially a very fast moving dart. Technically, DU is safe unless ingested because its radioactivity is not as great as even naturally occurring uranium.

Russia uses DU in its 125mm BM60 Svinets-2 penetrators:

The US uses DU in its 120mm M829A1/A2/A3/A4 series of penetrators.

There has been speculation as to the long term heath effects of DU, but more research needs to be conducted. It is generally not advisable to breath in any DU or any other heavy metal.
