Galatians 08, Freedom from Parts of the Law and License

Hi SBC Family,

This is an interesting little section when you understand the argument Paul is making. Some people just want to keep "parts" of the Law, such as the 10 commandments. What Paul is trying to convey is that you don't have to keep any of the Law for spiritual reasons such as justification and sanctification. The reason is because the Law was a unit, and Christ fulfilled the Law. How can any of the Law extend past the cross? Yet, at the same time it's easy to get confused. The Law did contain moral commandments such as "love your neighbor" or "do not murder." Obviously these are applicable today. How can they be applicable and the 10 commandments not be applicable? Very simple. The Law of Moses is not the only law. There is also the moral law. The moral law stems from the nature of God. Since God is eternal, the moral law is eternal. This means the moral laws preceded the Law of Moses, were included in the Law of Moses, and continue after the Law of Moses. At any rate, what's very clear is that no keeping of the law is necessary for justification. It's not a requirement to be sanctified either, but it is a result of living a new life by the Spirit. Sometimes Paul will say walk by the Spirit, and other times he will say love through faith or love by serving and not mention the Spirit's role. He is substituting the fruit of the Spirit for the result of living by the Spirit. We'll see if we can figure this out tonight. The important thing is freedom from keeping parts of the Law as well as freedom from the dangers of licentiousness and freedom to walk by the Spirit.
