The Latter Rain movement of the late 1940s and 1950s introduced a very unusual theme into American Christianity: no Christian training. Leaders in Latter Rain — most of which had never attended seminary — began claiming that men who studied to learn sound theology and history were “cold and formal.” Some went so far as to claim that these men were inspired by Satan, and began ridiculing seminaries by calling them “cemeteries”.

Interestingly, leaders of Latter Rain strongly supported certain seminaries without telling their converts. Institutions such as Bob Jones university, for example, were deeply connected to leaders of the Latter Rain movement.

William Branham, one of the primary catalysts for the Latter Rain and outspoken leader in the charge against seminaries, spoke highly of Bob Jones university when not engaging the anti-seminary crowd. In fact, Branham mentioned sending his son Billy Paul to Bob Jones seminary when speaking to a crowd in New York City. “Good Lord willing,” Billy Paul was going to seminary. When speaking to a crowd in Los Angeles, Branham mentioned Billy Paul going to the seminary but did not give the name. He simply called it “a college.”
