Return of the 90s nukes to Belarus, Lukashenko intensifies dialogue with Putin

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, speaking with a message to the people and the parliament of the country, said that he had urgently stepped up negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the return of nuclear weapons to Belarus.

Lukashenko explained his desire to return such weapons to the country as a violation of agreements by those who guaranteed not to put pressure on Belarus after the withdrawal of nuclear weapons from it.

"In the current circumstances and the military-political situation around our country, I strongly intensified negotiations with the President of Russia (Vladimir - ed.) Putin on the return of nuclear weapons to Belarus. It was on the return (of weapons - ed.), which were withdrawn in the 90s. Back then, under the guarantee of "no sanctions against those who withdrew, no pressure, no planning of offensives and revolutions." Everything was trampled down, everything was violated," Lukashenka said.

Lukashenko recalled that back in 1994-1995, his decision not to withdraw nuclear weapons was criticized not only by the West, but also by Russia’s first president. "I said, 'No, I refuse to withdraw [the nukes]. I still remember his reaction, as he told me, 'They will destroy and crush you, and you will not be able to maintain strategic warheads anyway," he concluded.
