Dear Pastor Bob: I was reading the comments of a friend who has turned from God to atheism. One of the ideas that has driven him away is the nature of a God who is supposedly just but "might make a bet with Satan and smite me for no reason" as in the book of Job. He also mentions harsh penalties for minor infractions seen in the Old Testament. While I don't agree that such criticism of God is cause to turn away from him, I understand where my friend is coming from on the matter. I'd love to hear your wisdom on that.
