FIRST OF ALL, the reader wants a good story.
By this the reader means good entertainment. He wishes to be amused, to be stirred, and sometimes to be instructed, if this can be managed without too much effort on his part. Writers who are not willing to meet this demand should not attempt magazine fiction. Those who do must remember that the reader is always right.
It must not be forgotten that magazine fiction provides amusement that is public. Magazines come through the mail, they lie about on tables, they are read in public places. This means that they are under the necessity of conforming to the conventions of their readers.
As everybody knows, people do not like to differ from their fellows except in some way that shows superiority. Obviously a man who reads only for amusement is not eager to appear eccentric...
