THE EDITOR of a magazine is the purchasing agent for his readers. His success and the tenure of his job depend upon their satisfaction. Mortality among editors is high because of this. For though the reader is always right, a good many authors feel that the editor is nearly always wrong. Not infrequently, readers agree.
Editors, however, must be taken into account, since the writer cannot reach the reader without the consent and assistance of the editor.
The first principle of an editor and one seldom violated is to buy what will please his readers. Occasionally an editor will indulge his personal taste or give way to his irritation at having to publish the same old plots. He may tire of blood and thunder or sweetness and light and relieve his feelings by publishing a yarn that is roundly cynical. But such temperish exceptions only prove the rule.
