Disney is setting sail with Mowana once again, this time in vibrant live-action. The studio has teamed with Dwayne Johnson to develop a live-action remake of its 2016 animated musical sensation.

Breaking news from Disney's investor call - Mowana is getting a live-action remake! The studio is partnering with Dwayne Johnson, who plans to return to the role of Maui as well as produce the film through his production company, Seven Bucks Productions. Jared Bush, who wrote the screenplay for the original movie, is also on board to write the remake. We also know that Executive producers include Auli‘i Cravalho, who voiced Mowana in the 2016 film.

At this stage, no director has been announced.

Mowana was originally released as an animated musical in 2016. and follows the journey of a young woman who defies her father as she sets out to reunite a mystical relic with its owner. Mowana was a commercial and critical success, earning over 665 million worldwide and an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Movie.

Disney has found success with its strategy of remaking classic animated movies into live-action features, with hits like Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin becoming billion-dollar successes. Mowana will be the first 21st-century title to receive a live-action remake from Disney.

Disney's success with live-action remakes has also inspired other studios, with Universal reportedly prepping a live-action remake of its beloved movie How to Train Your Dragon.
