The Freak Tidal Wave That Caused New Prophecies

In 1956, when it was announced that Jim Jones would host the international convention of ministers at the Cadle Tabernacle in Indianapolis, the Latter Rain sect began claiming that along with the UFO “signs” in the sky, God would soon be showing signs on the earth in the form of a tidal wave that would destroy Chicago, home of Joseph Mattsson-Boze’s Philadelphia Church.

According to William Branham, Chicago was the focal point of Nahum’s prophecy in the Old Testament book of Nahum – instead of the city of Nineveh and the Assyrian Empire as described in the book itself.[35] Chicago had already seen a “freak wave” in 1954, and because of its unexplained nature, the sect claimed that God himself was coming to destroy Chicago in the form of a much larger tidal wave.

Branham’s Chicago prophecy was one part of a much broader campaign of fear that the End of Days was imminent. Ultimately, Branham claimed, an atomic bomb would strike Indiana, a prophecy deeply impacted Jones and the trajectory of Peoples Temple. In 1961, Jones began spreading the prophecy claiming that he, too, had seen a vision of a nuclear holocaust in Chicago and Indianapolis. It is but one of many aspects of Branham’s ministry that pointed Peoples Temple towards the path that led to Jonestown.
