Have you heard of the Prohibition-era Federal Poison Program?

After letting the black market for booze get a little too out of hand following the Prohibition, America discovered criminal syndicates, like the ones run by Al Capone, were stealing industrial alcohol from paint manufacturing plants.

Despite knowing that the alcohol was then being redistilled and distributed at speakeasies they passed federal guidelines to substantially increase the amount of poisonous chemicals in this alcohol.

They allegedly claim that their intention was only to scare people, but the unintended consequences led to over 10,000 deaths and thousands more that went blind or worse.
