Before he respectfully and famously passed on a deal with Young Money Entertainment.
Before he had a guest appearance on a track with practically everyone else in the rap game.
Before he married his long time girlfriend – Dreka Haynes and became a family man.

Kevin Gates started rapping in the 7th grade and knew that it was his calling, he would hustle many mixtapes around the Louisianna area before his incarceration in 2008, he spent three years in prison released in 2011, but while he was locked up, his reputation and fan base had grown dramatically and he went straight to the studio…. Where he held nothing back.

Kevin Jerome Gilyard was born on February 5, 1986 in New Orleans Louisiana but would grow up in the State Capital of Baton Rouge. The oldest of three children, he never met his biological father till the 8th grade.

Growing up KEVIN lived in a house flooded with music and records. he most frequently listened to rappers such as Snoop Dogg, Master P, Big L, B0ne Thugs-n-Harmony, Notorious B.I.G., and Dr. Dre and for him it was a type of therapy from his own demons and depression.
Before he started rapping professionaly he would entertain his family at get togethers pretending he was a rapper like you see on TV. In middle school he was a bit of an outsider and recalls being name called and bullied.

Outside of music, Kevin got himself mixed up in street life as a means to make money and fit in. He associated a lot with his uncle and those much older than himself feeling most comfortable around them then as opposed to kids his own age or his younger siblings. He was also really close with his grandfather.
