Spirit photography emerged in the late 19th century and became extremely popular. It's primary purpose was to capture images of ghosts, but most have been proven to be a hoax. Still, some believe in their legitimacy. Some people also believe there's a difference between spirit and ghost photography--spirit photography being a manipulated hoax and ghost photography being a real photo taken at a haunted location.
