TOPIC SYNOPSIS

Near-death experiences (or NDEs) are typically experienced in life-threatening conditions and correspond to a state of disconnected consciousness. The NDEs are remarkably consistent in the features reported and appear to be a cross-cultural phenomenon.

Since initially being studied by Dr. Raymond Moody, the field of NDE research has expanded rapidly, creating its own research institution, “International Association for Near-Death Studies” (IANDS), and scientific journal, the “Journal of Near-Death Studies”.

It has been reported that 4-8% of the general population report having had a NDE. Furthermore, 10-23% of cardiac arrest survivors report having had a NDE.

Interestingly, in many NDE cases, the experiencer’s brain is impaired, compromised, or non-functional, yet the experiencer reports having had clear mental faculties and vivid perceptions after the experience. This is quite the paradox for out current materialist paradigm.

Herein, we investigate the scientific claims and research within the NDE field, discuss the history and prototypical characteristics of NDEs, compare NDEs to other mystical experiences such as those induced by psychedelic substances, and attempt to uncover the mechanisms at play responsible for NDEs.
