The James Webb Space Telescope (Webb or JWST) is a pioneer in scientific research and has revealed amazing new information on galaxies, planets, stars, and a variety of other fascinating cosmic phenomena. Given that it was only launched in December 2021 and has a 20-year operational life, the telescope is just getting started on its cosmic adventure.

Elon Musk tweeted a response to a BBC report about the telescope that said, "This is a big deal."

Google, the world's largest search engine, used a Webb query to test the new Bard AI bot in February 2023. Webb was not the first telescope to directly image an exoplanet, which is a fundamental fact that Bard sadly overlooked. However, as you can see here, Webb is also responsible for a ton of other amazing findings.

Webb was the result of years of labor by NASA scientists and engineers when it was launched on Christmas Day in 2021. The several steps of the telescope's deployment in the months that followed were carried without a hitch. Webb revealed its amazing initial photographs in mid-July. We will be able to observe practically every aspect of our universe, including the farthest galaxies, in greater detail with the aid of the infrared telescope, giving us a window into earlier times.

In a statement, the editors of the journal Science said that within days of the telescope going online in late June 2022, researchers "began identifying several thousand of unknown galaxies that were further away and older than any formerly recorded, several possibly over 150 million years older than the oldest identified by Hubble." Webb was selected as the publication's Science Breakthrough of 2022, while Jane Rigby, the operations project scientist for Webb, was selected by the journal Nature as one of the "10 people who helped shape science stories" for 2022.
