Pope St. Julius I (337-352) fought against the Arians and acquired a reputation for sanctity. He convened the Council of Sardica in Illyria in 343, where he supported St. Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria, in his battle against the Arian heresy. The Council confirmed St. Athanasius' innocence and deposed eight Arian bishops. The Fathers of the Council sent Pope Julius I a letter expressing their unity with him and denouncing the enemies of the Church. This letter is seen as a powerful anti-ecumenical document, emphasizing the Pope's role in supporting and defending the Catholic Faith against heresy. Pope St. Julius I's unwavering stance against the Arians and his support of orthodox doctrine earned him a reputation for holiness and courageous leadership in defense of the Faith.
