1 Samuel 18-20, Psalm 11 & 59 | David's Journal Entries
1 Samuel 18-20 tells the story of the relationship between David, a young shepherd boy, and Saul, the first king of Israel.
In chapter 18, David gains Saul's favor and becomes a close companion to the king, even marrying his daughter Michal. However, Saul soon becomes jealous of David's popularity and success and begins to plot against him.
In chapter 19, Saul attempts to kill David several times but fails each time due to David's quick thinking and the help of his friend Jonathan, Saul's son. Jonathan and David make a covenant of loyalty and friendship, and Jonathan warns David of Saul's intentions.
In chapter 20, Jonathan helps David escape from Saul's wrath and they part ways, both in tears. David flees to Nob and meets with Ahimelech the priest, who gives him food and the sword of Goliath, which David had defeated. Saul learns of David's whereabouts and sends his men to kill him, leading to the massacre of the priests in Nob. David escapes and flees to the Philistine city of Gath, where he pretends to be insane to avoid being captured.
David's faith is a prominent theme in these chapters, and it is particularly evident in two psalms that are believed to have been written during this period of his life: Psalm 11 and Psalm 59.
In Psalm 11, David expresses his trust in God's protection, even in the face of great danger. He declares that the Lord is his refuge and that he will not be shaken by the wicked schemes of his enemies. David's unwavering faith in God's sovereignty and justice provides him with a sense of security and peace in the midst of the chaos and uncertainty of his situation.
Similarly, in Psalm 59, David cries out to God for deliverance from his enemies, who are seeking to kill him. He acknowledges that his situation is dire and that he is powerless to save himself, but he trusts in God's unfailing love and strength to rescue him. David's faith is not just a passive belief, but an active commitment to seeking God's help and putting his trust in Him.
Overall, David's faith in God is a source of strength and comfort for him during these difficult times, and his psalms demonstrate a deep trust in God's protection and deliverance.
