Episode 1132: St Gemma Galgani

Saint Gemma Galgani was born on March 12, 1878, in Camigliano, a small village near Lucca, Italy. She was the fifth of eight children born to Enrico Galgani and Aurelia Landi. Gemma's early life was marked by tragedy, as she lost her mother at a young age and suffered from various illnesses throughout her childhood.

Despite her physical ailments, Gemma was known for her strong faith and deep spirituality from a young age. She had a profound love for Jesus Christ and a desire to dedicate her life to Him. Gemma's spiritual experiences began when she was just nine years old, with visions of her guardian angel guiding and comforting her.

At the age of 18, Gemma experienced the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, during a period of intense prayer. She bore these stigmata, which included wounds on her hands, feet, side, and forehead, for several years in secret, enduring great physical pain as a result.

Gemma's mystical experiences and devotion to God attracted the attention of her parish priest, who guided her spiritual growth and encouraged her to document her experiences in writing. Her spiritual writings, including letters and journals, provide valuable insights into her profound love for God and her desire for sanctity.

Gemma was beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1933 and canonized by Pope Pius XII in 1940. She is venerated as a patron saint of students, pharmacists, and those suffering from back injuries. Saint Gemma Galgani is remembered for her intense love for God, her heroic virtue, and her willingness to embrace suffering for the sake of Christ.
