Getting A Wake-Up Call | AS BOLD AS LIONS DEVOTIONAL | May 17, 2023

And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD, which I am commanding you today for your good? Deuteronomy 10:12,13

On the cusp of entering the promised land, Moses warns the Israelites that they must obey the commands of the Lord in order to prosper in the new territory. It sounds simple enough, doesn’t it? Seek after the Lord, give Him your whole heart, keep His commands and you will taste His goodness in the land you are inheriting. God even sets Israel up to win. Moving further into the book of Joshua, God goes before them into every battle. As long as Israel is faithful, they have victory. But over time, their hearts grew cold and they turned to other idols rather than the Lord.

We too know it sounds simple to serve the Lord and experience His blessing. So why do we often forgo His goodness and try to chart our own path? If I examine my own life, it’s in small steps. Missing my prayer time here and there and then I’ve gone a whole week without checking in. Forgetting to read my Bible or putting it off to the end of the day (when I easily fall asleep). These small compromises add up over time and start to draw my heart away from God. Sometimes it takes a wake-up call for God to get through and show us again how much we need Him. He might be calling you today, just as He called Israel. Will you hear His voice and let your heart be drawn to Him?

Question for today: How has my prayer time/Bible study time been with the Lord lately?

Pray: God help me cut out distractions and busyness in general which keep me from meeting with You. Let my heart not be easily drawn to lesser things.
