Collecting Nintendo Game Boy, GBA, DS, & 3DS Variants
Nintendo just gets it, they understand that people love to collect, that's one of the things that's made Pokémon so popular over the years. One of the things that Nintendo has really done a great job at is making people want to buy multiple versions of their hardware. Over the years, I've bought multiple versions of handheld systems simply because of the different styles. Let's take a look at some of the different styles of Nintendo handhelds that are in my collection.
From Wikipedia:
"Play it Loud" Game Boy
On March 20, 1995, Nintendo released several special edition Game Boy models with colored cases, advertising them in the "Play It Loud!" campaign, known in Japan as Game Boy Bros. Play It Loud! units were manufactured in red, green, black, yellow, white, blue, and clear (transparent), or sometimes called X-Ray in the UK. The most common are yellow, red, clear, and black. Green is fairly scarce but blue and white are the rarest. Blue was a Europe and Japan-only release, and white was a Japanese majority release with UK Toys R Us stores also getting it as an exclusive edition to them. White remains the rarest of all the Play it Loud colors. A rare, limited edition Manchester United Game Boy is red, with the team's logos emblazoned. It was released simultaneously with the Play it Loud! handhelds in the United Kingdom. The Play It Loud screens also have a darker border than the normal Game Boy.
Famicom 20th Anniversary Edition Game Boy Advanced SP
NES edition Game Boy Advance SP
In 2005, Nintendo released an improved version of the Game Boy Advance SP in North America, featuring a brighter backlit screen instead of the previous version's front lit screen. This GBA SP was Nintendo's first internationally-released handheld system to feature an integrated backlight. (However, there had already been a backlit system years earlier with the Japan-only Game Boy Light, which was essentially a Game Boy Pocket with an electroluminescent backlit display.) The AGS-101 was never officially released in Japan, however, as the front-lit AGS-001 models were still available on the market until the end of production.
Mario Kart Edition Nintendo DS
Originally Bundled with a copy of Mario Kart DS, this version of the DS was virtually identical to the launch model. The main differences were that, again, it included a copy of the game, it was red in color, and also included a Mario Kart DS Wrist Strap.
NES Edition Nintendo 3DS XL
I just recently picked this up, and you can check out that video here: https://youtube.com/shorts/TfG78rlbqE8
The NES Edition 3DS XL is a pretty pricey variant, but I was lucky that I got mine for a fairly decent price. I love the looks and style of the system and I am thrilled to have it in my collection.
These are what are in my collection, what about you? Do you have different variants of handhelds in your collection? Let me know down in the comments.
