The substance has remained one of the most common psychoactive medicines. Alprazolam is a prescription medication used to treat anxiety and panic disorders. Alprazolam belongs to a group of drugs called benzodiazepines. These work by lowering abnormal excitement in the brain. Alprazolam comes in tablet and oral solution forms and is usually taken two or three times a day, with or without food. Common side effects of alprazolam include sleepiness, lightheadedness, tiredness, and loss of coordination. Alprazolam can also cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know alprazolam affects you. Immediate-release tablets: 0.25 to 0.5 mg orally administered 3 times a day -Maximum dose: 4 mg/day. Usual Adult Dose for Panic Disorder: Immediate-release tablets: 0.5 mg orally administered 3 times a day. -Maximum dose: 10 mg/day. Extended-release tablets: -Initial dose: 0.5 to 1 mg orally once a day -Maintenance dose: 3 to 6 mg orally per day, preferably in the morning -Maximum dose: 10 mg/day. Xanax is a prescription medicine used to treat the symptoms of anxiety, panic disorder, and anxiety associated with depression. Xanax may be used alone or with other medications.
