Bizarre Victorian Practices #shorts
#darkhistory #weirdhistory #victorianera
Beginning around 1832, students studying anatomy were legally allowed to obtain and dissect the bodies of people condemned to death. But because there were such few people on death row each year and with medical students needing around 500 bodies annually, body snatching became prevalent. People who were out to make a quick buck would gladly dig up the bodies and sell them to local medical schools. It became such a problem that families would set watch over their deceased loved ones. Body snatching wasn’t unique to only the Victorians, though. It can be traced back as far as 1319 in Italy.
