This Lumber Company Helps Absorb Carbon Dioxide

Weyerhauser has cut down more trees than any company in American history. Weyerhause is the largest private landowner in the United States. Weyerhaeuser has 10.6 million acres of timberland in the US that the company says absorbs more carbon dioxide than the greenhouse gas it emits by producing lumber. They claim the trees remove 14 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually and another 10 million metric tons is absorbed by suppliers.
The company plans to increase lumber production by 5% next year.
The company grows more than 40 tree species. There are Douglas fir in the Pacific Northwest, and pine is grown from the US deep south all the way to northern Maine.
The company logs about 2% of its land each year and plants over 130 million saplings annually.
While I believe this company helps the environment through prudent and sustainable forestry practices, I do not think most environmentalists will understand this fact. While some would argue this company is a green future play, I just don’t think you can get the general public to understand that.
In general, the demand for lumber is linked to economic growth and housing booms. During downturns and housing market declines you will likely see a decrease in demand for lumber.
