I happened to be passing by the instant the baby goslings jumped from the curb and started running into the street about 20ft. in front of me. I was in the far left lane and immediately slowed and hit the hazard lights as I looked into the rearview to see a car coming up fast, so I angled the car to move to the outside lane and protect the babies. This also encouraged them to run back to their parents and jump back onto the curb. Now there were two cars coming up from behind and they both slowed when they saw me moving over slowly with hazards on. Yes, I will block to save an animal. Pay attention to conditions and slow when you're coming up to a busy intersection and well known animal and people crossing area! This location has two hotels and a college right there at this intersection and the mall and several other stores on the opposite side. Especially on the weekend, with Airmen from the base walking around, it's ALWAYS busy right here. Lucky for the family that I was there at that specific place at that very second, and was ahead of the other vehicles, because as fast as those two cars behind me were coming around the curve, one in each lane, this family would have been mowed right down by one car and then the other as they tried to get out of the way of the first car. I am certain that I saved them from a terrible tragedy today. Last week, a mother duck and many babies were run down on an access road. This family should be fairly safe, now that they've made it to the creek in the median, because it leads right into a small cove and then into the lake itself if they swim under the bridge. Many of the geese bring their babies here to the shallow and calmer waters of the creek in this median first. After the babies have grown a few days and gotten the hang of swimming and more aware of the dangers that face them, then these parents take them into the cove, and then into the lake. These goose parents seem to have a good system worked out, but not all of them do this. Some of them take their babies directly into the lake, but many threats are waiting there for them, including herons, snapping turtles, off-leash dogs, and off -leash children...
