Over and over again, get we asked whether families can have access to medical records in intensive care. And over and over again, can I see that families in intensive care are simply fearful of even asking for that and you need to stop being fearful. ICUs are very good at intimidating families, but you need to stop being intimidated and you need to ask for medical records from day one.
We’ve been doing this now for close to 10 years, professionally consulting and advocating for families in intensive care all around the world. There is not one client that has not been able to get access to medical records in predominantly English-speaking countries. It’s your right. It’s not a privilege. We have access to the relevant legislation that this is your right to have access to medical records.
It doesn’t matter whether you are in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, or New Zealand, it’s your right to get access to medical records. And we’ve never had a client that could not get access to medical records, but you got to start the conversation with ICU teams. And always keep in mind, if they don’t want to give you access to medical records, what do they have to hide? What’s so secretive about what your loved one is getting in ICU? There shouldn’t be any secrets. It should all be transparent so that you can make informed decisions, have peace of mind, real power, real control, and that you can influence decision-making fast. And we are here to help you with that.
