"Sentimental Lady," written by Bob Welch, was Welch's first entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart and landed at the no. 8 position on the chart; it was Welch's only top 10 hit (Whitburn, 2013). Welch was a member of Fleetwood Mac from 1971-1974 before going solo (songfacts, 2023). On writing the song, Welch said that "The lyric was probably referencing my first wife (at the time) Nancy. The original placeholder/dummy lyrics for the chorus (before I had 'real' lyrics) were, 'my legs are sticks and my feet are stones" (songfacts, 2023). In 2012, Welch had spinal surgery from which he believed would leave him an invalid; three months later he committed suicide (C. Couch, hollywoodreporter, Jun 8, 2012). In his note to his wife he said “I’m not going to do this to you,” referring to the fact that she would need to take care of him as his mother needed to care for his father who was an invalid (M. Fleeman, People, Jun 8, 2012). So sad.
