Brief Intro To My New Travel Companion, The XV16 Camera Glasses.
I like taking videos and pictures especially when i travel. Lots and lots of videos and pictures! But, the problem is that with videos and cameras, it takes quite a bit of effort to either snap pictures or take videos with a video camera or a still camera. Even with a handphone, it can also get in the way and you're too busy using the handphone and it takes away the enjoyment of the moment especially during travels and holidays.
Recently, i did some research on camera glasses which had been available in the market (well, at least online) for quite some time but i had not had the urge to test them out. Now, after some research, i decided to acquire a pair off camera glasses to accompany me on my trip starting next week.
The camera glasses cost me about RM350 which, at the current exchange rate is about USD80 or GBP64 or €72.
For the past two weeks, since i got the camera glasses, i had been doing some field tests and I am quite pleased with the results which i hope will prove to be a good travel and vacation companion. I will be posting some selected field test videos in this channel if you care to see the results.
Firstly, you will notice that the video resolution is not as good as my HD vidcams and still cams but still i think it's quite acceptable considering that i don't have to do anything except put it on my face as i do my pair of glasses, switch it on when i start my journey and switch off when i want to or i have to.
Secondly, the video field of view is 90 degrees and that would not be suitable for close subjects but fine for scenes and buildings. You can see the distortion at the edge of the clips. However, for my purposes, this is acceptable to me because i intend to capture scenes as opposed to individuals with this camera glasses.
Thirdly, image stabilization could be better but it's acceptable too. It sure beats holding a vidcam or camera all the time and annoying people around you especially my daughter.
Forthly, the advertisement says that you can actually capture 90 minutes continuously but that's a lie. At best, if you don't have an external source, at best, it can capture 60 - 70 minutes. Actually continuous shots mean that the videos are continuously captured, saved and stored in 5 minute clips which is okay because, for me, it's difficult to work and edit videos that are hours and hours long. So, a 60 minutes video would mean 12 video clips of 5 minutes.
Actually the duration of the video could be more than 90 minutes if the glasses is attached to an external power source (power bank)
discreetly so that you don't have power cables hanging out of your face.
Fifth, the audio capturing is lousy and not very clear but for the price i paid i am ok with that.
Sixth, it also has a bluetooth facility to hook to your phone to answer phones, make calls and listen to audio from your phone but i don't care too much about that.
Okay, here's a few things that i really don't like about the camera phone.
Firstly, the documentation sucks and it took me a few days just to learn how to capture videos. It was probably written by an idiot who don't speak english and does not know how to relate to the users. The idiot probably haven't heard of diagrams and pictures to illustrate.
Secondly, nowhere in the documentation tell me how to adjust the date time stamp. For now, I don't really care because i am going to transfer the videos daily in its own date folders; something that i had always done in all my videos.
