The Ability to Deeply Rest

Sleep as an indicator of mental health does not apply to people who are mentally ill but feel no discomfort about it, for example narcissists and psychopaths. These personality disorders (NPD/APD) are ego-syntonic, meaning that the individual doesn't feel inner conflict about who they are. With that being said, they both certainly lack a place within themselves to call home. They are empty, chaotic shells.

For everyone else, anxiety/tension plague the soul, and produce an inability to get in touch with that inner home that exists beneath the turmoil.

Our unconscious conflicts become apparent during rest, when our conscious defenses fall. Too much conflict means no ability to relax.
