Men in their prime are dropping out of the labor force

Men between the ages of 25 and 54 are dropping out of the workforce. One in nine men are out of the labor force today versus one in 50 during the mid 1950s. If the labor participation rate for prime age men could reach its 1990 level, that would be an additional 2.7 million workers. If we can hit 1970’s level, that would be 7.1 million men.
The lack of men in the workforce is a deeply troubling sign of something wrong.
