In the first episode of Peaky Blinders, we are introduced to the notorious Shelby family who are based in the industrial city of Birmingham, England in 1919, just after the end of World War I. Led by the charismatic and ruthless Thomas Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy), the Shelby family is known for their criminal activities and their distinctive peaked caps with razor blades sewn into the brims.

The episode begins with the Shelby family stealing a shipment of guns, but things quickly turn complicated when Inspector Campbell (played by Sam Neill) arrives in town, determined to put an end to their criminal enterprise. Meanwhile, Thomas's sister Ada (played by Sophie Rundle) has a chance encounter with a young communist named Freddie Thorne (played by Iddo Goldberg) and the two strike up a forbidden romance.
