Bored with Life?

If "why don't you go try new things?" or "go try a bunch of different activities and see what you like!" has been directed at you, you've probably felt and expressed a certain boredom about life.

Yet this advice is strange, because the problem is not that you're too stupid to consider doing random activities: You don't need someone to think for you, your problem is precisely that you think way too much (about the wrong things). You're obsessed with (and a slave to) your rigid beliefs (or rigid lack of belief), values, repetitive thoughts, stubborn emotional states, etc.

It is exactly your lack of spontaneity that keeps you bored. You do not have access to spontaneous movement of your personality -- and therefore your life lacks excitement, dynamism, fluidity, openness, freshness -- because maladapted defense mechanisms are keeping you stifled. So, the advice of being spontaneous feels like a bad option; not because it is, but because your psyche is fanatically anti-spontaneity. "We have to figure things out before we move forward", is the rigid, overly-skeptical hill it wants you to die on.
