Norway's capital Oslo has unveiled a statue of a walrus

Norway's capital, Oslo, has erected a bronze statue of Freya, a walrus who was put down in August 2020 over safety concerns. The sculpture, which cost around $25,000 and was funded through an online campaign, depicts the mammal lying on her side on a shore.

Freya had become a popular attraction in Norway after climbing onto boats to sunbathe, but the local authorities put her down after people ignored warnings not to get too close to the animal, putting themselves and her at risk. Creator Astri Tonoian named the statue "For Our Sins" as it symbolises how humans treat wild nature and humans.
