The UCSC trailer park everyone wants to live in

Santa Cruz is the second most expensive market for renters in the nation after San Francisco. For students, a single room off campus in a shared apartment ranges from $1,300 to $1,5000 per month. Roughly 80% spend 30% or more of their income on rent and 44% of students spend 70% or more of their income on rent.
This problem was only made worse by remote workers who flocked to Santa Cruz after leaving the Bay Area during the pandemic. A 2020 wildfire destroyed 900 residential units in the Santa Cruz area as well.
Around 9% of UCSC undergraduates reported homelessness in 2020, which is the highest of an UC campus.
Perhaps the most sought-after housing option at UCSC is a 42-trailer park called “Camper Park” that is owned and operated by UCSC. At $800 a month, these trailers cost less than a room in a shared apartment on the private market.
USSC plans to have an additional 3,700 beds by 2028 but the community opposes student housing. A 3,000 bed project has faced four years of lawsuits from residents of Santa Cruz.
