#MinstrelShows are often labeled racist. But if the songs (coon songs) in those shows were written by Black people and were put on by Black people, then how are they racist. Why is it that blackface is not seen as the art of the time but as a racist swipe at Black people? And has it always been seen as racist, if so why were Blacks creating “coon songs” and their own minstrel shows?
