Teaching foundation work to a 4 pack of out of control dogs

Whenever we talk about obedience, people are typically surprised we don’t teach “stay”. That’s because our “stay” is built right into the commands.

Down = down until you’re released and I say “break”
Place, sit, heel, and recall all follow this same rule.

All commands come with an implied “stay”

So how do you get the dog out of command? Use a release cue like “break” or “free”

Then your dog will have a clear distinction between when they’re in command or not. No more blurred lines.

When a dog is on break, they’re technically free to do whatever they want. Run, sniff, play, or in most dogs cases: follow their handler and remain engaged with them.

In this video, Courtney is not requiring any of the dogs to stay with her. But trained dogs historically just do.

Why? Because when you’ve spent hours and weeks and months training a dog, building a relationship, and basically becoming that dogs entire world…. Why would they ever want to leave your side?
