A Demonstration of God's Love. In Romans 5:8, the apostle Paul says, "God demonstrates His own love toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. The word "for" translates the Greek preposition "huper" which is the preposition of substitution. 1 Peter 3:18 demonstrates a similar idea where Peter says, "Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to "God." And when did Christ die for us? Not when we were sweet and lovely and wonderful. We never have been, are not, and never will be. We are sinners before a holy God. But God demonstrates His love toward us by sending His Son to die in our place that we might be reconciled to Him.
