I couldn't Sum it up like this guy from Reddit: "Every time I read about concentrates -- and waxes and lipids are talked about as an obvious negative that no one even seems to question much (i.e. concentrates with the least waxes/lipids are the highest quality and the most high-end/highly desirable) -- I find myself thinking "But...why?" Lipids are known to enhance the bioavailability of numerous medicinal and recreational compounds and are even intentionally added to certain herbal extracts to enhance absorption, increase systemic retention time, and augment blood-brain barrier permeability. This is the case with the popular patented tumeric extract invented by UCLA neuroscientists called Longvida; it uses what they call a Solid Lipid Curcumin Particle, or SLCP, to achieve extraordinarily high bioavailability, longer retention time in the body, and greater ability to reach the brain, all due to the fact that the lipids protect the curcumin particles from glucuronidation. Of course, we would need science specifcally showing this to be the case with cannabis in humans specifically, but since almost all of the active components in cannabis are lipophilic (THC and CBD are fats/lipids themselves!!), it would make a ton of sense and be consistent with existing research on other lipophillic (fat-soluble) molecules. Moreover, these pharmacokinetic characteristics following co-adminstration of lipids/fats and cannabinoids have been demonstrated in vivo in rats (see sources). We also know from scientific research that the affinity of cannabinoids for rat brain cannabinoid receptors is incredibly similar to their affinity for human cannabinoid receptors.

In addition to all of these aforementioned reasons, and speaking more broadly, it seems that whenever we try to alter the composition of foods and medicines found in nature, something is lost. When you isolate one or a few compounds from a plant and discard others, the whole plant synergism is lost. Not only this, but often times there is another component in the plant that balances the negative side-effects of the active compound you are mainly utilizing the substance for -- green tea has tons of L-Theanine which makes the caffeine in it much less jittery and stimulating and helps dampen the caffeine crash, which is why even drinking 20 cups of green tea will never feel quite the same as taking a caffeine pill of the same dose.

I am a psychopharmacology researcher but also just a dude passionate about natural medicines, who happens to also be a part-time stoner 🤓📚😎. The study of whole foods and whole plant medicines, as contrasted with singular ingredients and synthetics, is fascinating to me so I just wanted to put this theory out there and see what you folks on r/rosin think about this and if you think this could explain (at least partially) why so many of us prefer rosin over distillates and BHO extractions."
